AARN – Handcrafter Association from the North of Portugal – appeared in 1996, because of the necessity of an organized structure that represented the artisans in the defense of their interests and promoted the development of their professions.

Legalized in 1997, its priority has been the improvement of the artisans professional conditions; a great step has been given with the creation of the “Statute of Artisan” (law-decretes 41/2001 and 110/2002), for which AARN contributed as a member of PPART – National Comission for the Arts and Crafts.  

Currently, AARN follows the process of attribution of  Statutes of Craftsman and Artisan Productive Unit, and contributes for the same, as well as many projects to increase portuguese arts and crafts market and the international promotion of it, specially in the North region.

AARN has full conscience of the importance of the associativism to create a new dynamics in the area. Without a doubt, is essential an active cooperation between hancrafters representative entities, public and private institutions, that can generate synergies with potentialities for the future of Arts and Crafts, and a new image of progress and quality with the dignity that it deserves, as identity and cultural expression of this people.
